It’s one thing to be true to a style, but it’s another to be creative within it. Jase Thirwall is one of the heavy tech trance producers currently focusing on fusing both the harder and lighter variants of 138-140 bpm Trance. But this isn’t something of a trend for him — the Scottish DJ / Producer has been on this path for quite a while now. With releases like “Slam” dating back to 2010, this is an intentional idea for Thirwall’s sound. He is carefully improving and crafting a style that has been noted to benefit the DJ sets of these kind of artists, allowing for a more dynamic set and adding additional impact to the contrasting drops. His talent is getting recognition, with his last few releases being on the established Discover White and Mental Asylum labels. In tracks like “Freaked” you can get a good concept of what Jase is all about: heavy grooves, and classic trance ambience in the breakdowns before he rips your head off. Creatively using some attacky pluck arps reminiscent of John Askew, he transitions smoothly into a more aggressive drop. What’s more is that he takes the time to add an additional drop where the plucks return and continue into a lighter beat, satisfying both ends of the spectrum. Then there’s a continuation where both styles merge and perk the listener’s ear just before he would be transitioning into the next DJ selection.
The other side of the same EP, “Ram Raid,” is where you can clearly see his potential at taking this style to new territory over time. The breakdown can’t be described more accurately than “pure classic,” with big atmospheric vibes and even digital sounding synths swirling across the stereo spectrum. The drop itself is pretty innovative: it’s a bit of a bait and switch, but with a reward at the end. Definitely worth hearing if you’re a fan of this style of Trance!
